Fat freezing, also known as cryolipolysis or by the brand name CoolSculpting, is generally considered to be a safe and non-invasive procedure for reducing fat in specific areas of the body. It has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for fat reduction.
However, like all medical procedures, it does carry some risks and potential side effects. These may include:
Redness, swelling, and bruising: These are temporary and typically resolve within a few weeks.
Tenderness, cramping, or aching: Some discomfort may occur at the treatment site, which usually resolves within a few days to a week.
Numbness or loss of sensation: This can occur in the treated area due to the freezing effect on the nerves. It's typically temporary and resolves over time.
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia: This is a rare condition where the treated area increases in size instead of decreasing. It's more common in males and requires surgical intervention for correction.
Skin damage or ulceration: Very rarely, damage to the skin or underlying tissues can occur due to the extreme cold. This is extremely rare but can be serious if it does occur.
Rare complications: As with any procedure, there is a very small risk of serious complications such as infection or blood clots.
The procedure should be performed by a trained healthcare professional in a controlled setting. It's also important to have a consultation before the procedure to discuss your medical history and any potential risks or side effects.
If you have a medical condition such as cryoglobulinemia, cold urticaria, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, you should not undergo cryolipolysis, as it could lead to serious complications.
It's also important to remember that fat freezing is not a weight loss procedure and should not replace a healthy diet and exercise. It's intended to target stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise, not for large-scale weight loss.
Fat Melting has far less risks but there are some risks that can be a little tender:
Redness, swelling, and bruising: These are common side effects that typically resolve within a few days or weeks.
Discomfort or pain: Some people may experience discomfort or pain during the procedure, although this usually resolves shortly after the treatment.
This all subsides within 2-3 weeks and the fat cells are permanently eliminated from the body.
