How does skin needling work?

Skin needling, also known as microneedling or collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves creating tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin using fine needles. This technique is used to improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of scars, and stimulate skin renewal.

Here's how it works:

  1. Creating micro-injuries: The microneedling device, which is a roller or pen-like tool studded with very fine, short needles, is moved across the skin, creating hundreds of microscopic punctures or "micro-wounds" in the skin's surface.

  2. Stimulating healing response: These tiny punctures are perceived by the body as damage, which triggers the skin's natural healing response. The skin starts to produce more collagen and elastin, which are proteins that contribute to the skin's elasticity, firmness, and plumpness.

  3. Skin renewal and repair: The increased production of collagen and elastin can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars, and can also improve skin texture and firmness. It can even enhance the absorption of topical products, making them more effective.

The treatment is generally safe for all skin types and can be used on various body parts, including face, neck, and décolleté. However, like any procedure, it does come with risks, such as skin irritation, swelling, redness, and bruising. In rare cases, there can be infection or changes in skin colour.

As with any cosmetic procedure, it's important to seek treatment from a qualified professional to ensure the procedure is performed safely and effectively. Also, be aware that it typically takes multiple sessions to see significant results, and the results are not permanent, as our skin naturally loses collagen over time due to aging and environmental factors.
